Explosion in Kandarhar governor’s guesthouse leaves 12 dead, 12 others wounded

Explosion during the visit of AUE envoy killed and injured dozens of high ranking Afghan officials and foreign diplomates. 5 people were killed 12 others were wounded  - Governor of Kandahar, Hamayon Azizi and the UAE Ambassador in Afghanistan are among the injured, Samim Khalwak, Kandahar Governor Spokesperson told reports. 

Speaking with press, Police Chief of Kandahar, who escaped the attack unhurt said that the blast was due to explosives placed underneath a sofa inside the guesthouse.

A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity to NAI, confirmed 12 people dead and 12 others injured.

Deputy Governor of Kandahar Abdul Ali Shamsi, Afghan Diplomate in DC and nephew of Hamid Karzai’s wife Yama Quraishi, and a number of Arab Diplomates are among the dead. Karzai’s cousin Hashim Karzai is wounded.

The attack occurred just after another explosion in Kabul and was followed by a suicide bombing in neighboring Helmand province which left dozens of people killed and injured altogether. 

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack in Kandahar yet.
